Geneva Public LibraryCatch the Reading Bug”June 16 - July 25 The 2008 Summer Reading Program is open to young people, preschool through eighteen, with fun, games, adventures, learning about BUGS of course, and we can’t forget READING BOOKS!
Families are encouraged to participate together by doing projects and reading books together. All programs are free. There are no fees or costs to you. However, overdue fines are in effect and if you lose a book, you still have to pay for it. This year we are trying something different. There will only be a few scheduled events. There will be on going activities that you can participate in when it is convenient for you. You will be able to sign up for these activities at the Geneva Public Library. Some of these projects are limited in the number of participants. There is something for everyone. When your parent or guardian fill out the registration form, you will receive a “Catch the Reading Bug” bag with some items such as bookmarks, a sheet to list the names of the books you read this summer, a registration sheet with the projects you plan to participate in, and various other items to make your summer reading experience a fun one. We do require that you become a member of the Geneva Public Library before registration. Not to worry. It is free! Special Note to Parents and Guardians: Some of the projects that are available this summer will use fabric paints and other items that may permanently stain clothing. If your child signs up for one of these, you will be responsible for protecting your children’s clothing. The Geneva Public Library will furnish the paint, brushes, and other items needed to do these projects. Some Things to Remember!Children without a drivers licence must have a parent or guardian present with them at the Geneva Public Library. We encourage you to participate in the projects and reading books WITH your children. Children that are disruptive or destructive will be asked to leave. If the disruptive or destructive behavior repeats, the library director will remove the child from this year’s reading program. The Geneva Public Library provides it’s services for free. However, overdue fines are in effect. If you lose or damage a book, you pay for it. The overdue rate for children is .05 per day per book. That’s right a nickle. Message to the Adults! We would love to have your participation. There is something very special when working with children. So when your child is here, work along side them on a project. You will be amazed at what YOU will learn. When they are looking for books to read, look with them. Find books you both can enjoy. We have several books that are written as a series for older children. For example: Angie Sage’s Majyk series, Allison Croggin’s Pellinor series, or the Lemony Snicket series, and my favorite, Narnia. Pick one and get two book marks. Let your child begin reading and when they put the book down, you pick it up and read to where they stopped. Then talk about what you have read. Wonder about what is making the characters do the things they do. Make predictions about what will happen next and see who is correct. When you are ready to stop working on a project, you will need to put the supplies you used back in their proper place. Then you will need to put your project back in the bag you were given when you signed up. The paint and glue provided will dry quickly so you won’t have to wait long. Look for a book to read while you wait! Some Things to Put on the Calendar!
